Evaporator Fouling and Residue Compliance Reshape Tomato Line Selection

The global tomato processing equipment market was valued at roughly USD 1.42 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 1.85 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual rate of 3.3%. Growth is moderate, but the logic of equipment selection is undergoing a subtle shift. Over the past five years, buyers' decision weights concentrated on two dimensions: daily processing tonnage and total line quotation. Industry signals in 2026 indicate that two variables previously relegated to "operational details"—the high-Brix fouling behavior of evaporators and pesticide residue control at the raw material end—are now substantively reshaping equipment configurations.

Consider evaporation first. In tomato concentration, evaporation accounts for over 76% of total heat consumption. This figure has driven the adoption of multi-effect evaporators, but the marginal benefit of adding effects is not linear. Triple-effect evaporators perform stably in 28–30 Brix standard paste production, but when the target shifts to 36–38 Brix heavy concentrate, the fouling rate on the final-effect heating tubes rises markedly. Fouling reduces heat transfer coefficients and compresses cleaning frequency from once a week to once every two days—effective capacity loss far exceeds the steam savings from an additional effect. Industry discussions have recently begun calling for "incorporating quality parameters into techno-economic evaluation," meaning that lycopene retention's sensitivity to temperature-time combinations may make a "fewer effects, more stable temperature control" solution superior in total cost to a "more effects, frequent shutdowns for cleaning" alternative. For processors whose primary product is high-Brix export paste, this judgment carries more reference value for equipment selection than a simple comparison of effect counts.

Another thread comes from the export compliance side. In June 2026, the EU RASFF notified Chinese export tomato paste for chlorfenapyr residue at 0.072 mg/kg and chlorpyrifos at 0.013 mg/kg, both exceeding the 0.01 mg/kg maximum residue limit. For equipment suppliers, the transmission path of this signal is indirect—pesticide residues are primarily determined by cultivation-side controls, not processing equipment—but it is indirectly reshaping the priorities of whole-line design. As uncertainty at the raw material end rises, the "tolerance capacity" of the processing end becomes a new configuration consideration: whether the pre-treatment washing section needs redundant high-pressure spray or brush-roller scrubbing stations to cope with batch-to-batch residue variation; whether online inspection needs to move from finished-product sampling forward to raw material screening before crushing. These links, previously treated as "optional configurations," are being re-evaluated in export-oriented projects.

Structural data from the Chinese market provides background for these judgments. In the first half of 2026, China's tomato product exports reached USD 620 million, up 8.3% year-on-year, but overseas customers' willingness to place new orders weakened, and international trade compliance barriers continued to rise. Meanwhile, domestic consumption grew 12.7% year-on-year, with the domestic share exceeding 45% for the first time—hotpot catering and prepared food channels becoming the incremental sources. This shift in the domestic-export demand pattern means: export-oriented lines need to reserve engineering margin for stricter residue and Brix consistency requirements, while domestic-oriented lines focus more on product switching flexibility—the ability to rapidly change over among diced tomato, tomato sauce, and direct-fill tomato juice is now valued above single-category peak capacity.

Take Xinjiang Guannong as an example. Of its daily processing capacity of 16,000 tonnes of fresh tomato, the coordinated production of bulk tomato paste alongside small-pack and condiment categories is explicitly listed as a competitive advantage. This configuration logic—"large lines for baseline volume, small lines for structural adjustment"—echoes the aforementioned choices on evaporator effect count and pre-treatment redundancy: equipment is no longer a fixed system customized for a single product specification, but a reconfigurable platform that must dynamically adjust its process window within the season according to order structure.

For manufacturers planning tomato processing lines, the question to answer is no longer "triple-effect or quadruple-effect," but "what is the ratio of high-Brix export paste to domestic condiment products in my portfolio, and does raw-material residue risk require me to reserve upgrade space in the washing section?" The answers to these two questions determine a line's actual output five years out more than the evaporator's nameplate parameters.
